Synopsis

LeafyBus Electric Mobility and Eicher Trucks & Buses have formed a strategic partnership to deploy 100 electric intercity sleeper buses across India, aiming to expand zero-emission travel on medium- and long-distance routes. Under the agreement, LeafyBus will supply electric powertrain systems, while Eicher will handle bus body manufacturing and market rollout. The electric sleeper buses are designed for overnight travel, offering improved comfort, lower noise and reduced operating costs for operators. The rollout will focus on major intercity corridors, supported by growing government incentives for electric mobility. The partnership reflects rising interest in sustainable commercial transport as battery technology and charging infrastructure continue to improve nationwide.

LeafyBus Electric Mobility, an Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, and Eicher Trucks & Buses have entered a strategic partnership to roll out 100 electric intercity sleeper buses across India, the companies said. The move is designed to promote sustainable, zero-emission passenger mobility on medium- and long-distance routes, where diesel coaches have traditionally dominated.

Under the collaboration, LeafyBus is expected to supply its electric powertrain systems while Eicher will provide bus body manufacturing and commercialisation expertise. The electric sleeper buses are intended to combine environmental benefits with the comfort and convenience of intercity travel, offering passengers reclining sleeper berths and amenities suitable for overnight journeys.

The deployment will target key intercity corridors, with operators able to leverage the buses for travel services between major cities and regional hubs. The companies said they anticipate strong interest from private bus operators and fleet owners looking to reduce operating costs and comply with increasingly stringent emission norms.

The partnership reflects broader policy momentum in India towards electrification of commercial transport, including buses. Several states and central government programmes have introduced incentives for electric bus adoption, charging infrastructure development and fleet electrification, with an aim to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. Electric intercity buses have been slower to adopt compared with intra-city city buses, but improvements in battery energy density and charging networks are increasingly making longer-distance electric travel viable.

According to industry sources, electric sleeper buses could help operators save on fuel costs and maintenance over the long term, offsetting higher initial investment through lower variable operating costs. Enhanced passenger comfort is also expected to be a differentiator, as the electric drivetrains produce less noise and vibration compared with conventional diesel engines.

Manufacturing partnerships between electric vehicle specialists and established commercial vehicle firms are seen as a key enabler in bringing such products to market at scale. LeafyBus and Eicher said they will work together on testing, certification and customer support to ensure reliability and serviceability for operators adopting the new buses.

The companies indicated that the first buses under the partnership are expected to enter service on select routes once regulatory clearances and operator agreements are finalised. The collaboration is part of a growing trend in India's transport sector towards electrified commercial vehicles that meet both sustainability goals and passenger expectations for comfort and convenience.
