Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has undertaken a demolition drive against unauthorised constructions in the Belapur division, following directions from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. Acting under the supervision of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, the encroachment department carried out removal action on multiple illegal structures after the concerned parties failed to comply with notices issued under provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The drive covered residential and temporary structures across Belapur village, CBD Belapur and adjoining areas. Civic officials stated that similar enforcement action would continue in the coming period to curb unauthorised development and protect planned urban growth within Navi Mumbai.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation intensified its enforcement action against unauthorised constructions in the Belapur division earlier this week, as part of a city-wide drive to curb illegal development. The operation was carried out by the NMMC encroachment department under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with oversight from Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad.

According to the civic body, notices had earlier been served to several property occupants under relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. These included action under Section 53(1)(a) against unauthorised construction linked to Rafik Kazi and others at house number 395, located to the south of NMMC School No. 01 in Belapur village, Sector 20, CBD Belapur. Notices under Section 54 of the Act were also issued to Salim Majid Yakub Sayyed at house number 0390 in Belapur village, Navi Mumbai, and to Ganesh R Tandel and others at house number 279/005 near Potdar School, Karave village, Sector 36.

In addition, the civic body identified unauthorised temporary monsoon sheds erected at Suncity Building in Sector 15. The concerned parties had been instructed to remove these structures on their own; however, inspections revealed that the illegal constructions had not been dismantled voluntarily.

As a result, the Belapur division office organised a demolition drive on February 4, 2026, to remove the unauthorised structures. The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner and Divisional Officer Prashant Nerkar, along with Assistant Engineer Atmaram Kale and other officials and staff from the Belapur division.

The demolition exercise involved substantial manpower and equipment, including around 15 labourers, six gas cutters, 10 hammers, one poklane machine and two JCBs. Officials from the local police department, along with police personnel and security staff from the encroachment department, were present at the site to maintain law and order during the operation.

The municipal corporation stated that such enforcement action would be further intensified in the future to deter unauthorised construction and ensure adherence to approved development plans. Civic officials reiterated that strict action would continue against violators as part of efforts to maintain planned urban development and safeguard public land across Navi Mumbai.
