The Mohali district administration has carried out a major anti-encroachment drive against illegal and unauthorised structures in the Kansal catchment area of Sukhna Lake in compliance with directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The operation, conducted in the Naya Gaon area and surrounding localities such as Patiala Ki Rao and Shivalik Vihar, targeted buildings that violated court orders, environmental norms and land-use regulations in ecologically sensitive and floodplain zones. Enforcement teams, operating under the supervision of a designated nodal officer and supported by municipal and police personnel, dismantled multiple structures that were found to obstruct natural drainage and pose environmental risks. Officials reaffirmed a zero-tolerance approach to unauthorised construction in the protected catchment and warned of strict action against future violations. Residents were advised to follow sanctioned building plans and regulatory requirements.
The Mohali district administration on Monday carried out a large-scale anti-encroachment drive targeting illegal structures around the ecologically sensitive Kansal catchment area of Sukhna Lake, as directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The enforcement action, undertaken in the Naya Gaon area and adjacent localities including Patiala Ki Rao and Shivalik Vihar, focused on removing unauthorised constructions that had persisted despite prior notices and warnings from authorities.
The anti-encroachment operation was led by a designated nodal officer and involved teams from the municipal administration, including the building inspector, general inspector and executive officer. A substantial police contingent was deployed to ensure law and order and support the enforcement teams during the systematic and phased removal of illegal structures. Station house officers and local police personnel provided on-site security and operational assistance throughout the drive.
Officials said that the targeted areas fall within the Kansal catchment and floodplain zones, which are environmentally sensitive and crucial for maintaining the natural drainage channels that feed and support the ecological balance of Sukhna Lake. Despite repeated notices and opportunities for voluntary compliance, several structures remained in violation of High Court orders, environmental safeguards and land-use norms. The encroachments were found to obstruct natural water flow paths and posed an increased risk of flooding and environmental degradation.
The demolition drive was carried out in a systematic and orderly manner. Heavy machinery was used to dismantle the structures after enforcement teams determined that the constructions had been raised in breach of court directives and regulatory frameworks. Authorities emphasised that all efforts were made to conduct the operation peacefully, with coordination between administrative and police teams to prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials reiterated the administration's commitment to protecting the Sukhna Lake catchment and enforcing applicable environmental and municipal laws in the wider public interest. They warned that any future violations of court directions or land-use regulations within the protected zones would invite strict legal action, including further demolition and penal proceedings, without additional notice to owners. Residents and property owners in the vicinity were urged to adhere strictly to approved building plans and comply with environmental and land-use norms to avoid coercive enforcement actions.
The drive reflects ongoing efforts by civic and district authorities to uphold judicial and environmental mandates, preserve critical ecological areas and prevent the proliferation of unauthorised construction in sensitive zones surrounding Sukhna Lake.
