Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland has entered into a strategic partnership with Indonesia's state-owned defence and industrial equipment manufacturer PT Pindad to jointly develop and manufacture electric buses and defence vehicles. The memorandum of understanding focuses on products tailored to Indonesia's mobility requirements and national security needs. Under the agreement, Ashok Leyland will contribute its global experience in commercial electric vehicle platforms and defence mobility solutions, while Pindad will bring its engineering expertise, local manufacturing capabilities and strong presence within Indonesia's defence ecosystem. The collaboration aims to address the country's terrain-specific and operational requirements while supporting local manufacturing. The company indicated that the partnership aligns with its international expansion strategy in both electric mobility and defence segments, particularly across emerging markets in Southeast Asia.
Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia's state-owned defence and industrial equipment manufacturer PT Pindad to jointly develop electric buses and defence vehicles for the Indonesian market. The collaboration marks a strategic step for the Chennai-headquartered company as it looks to expand its footprint in electric mobility and defence manufacturing across Southeast Asia.
According to Ashok Leyland, the agreement outlines a framework for joint development and manufacturing of electric buses and defence vehicles designed to meet Indonesia's growing public transport requirements and national security priorities. The proposed products will be tailored to local operating conditions, including terrain, infrastructure and specific operational demands.
The partnership is expected to combine Ashok Leyland's global experience in commercial electric vehicle platforms and defence mobility solutions with PT Pindad's engineering capabilities, established manufacturing infrastructure and long-standing role in Indonesia's defence sector. The company stated that this complementary approach would allow both partners to accelerate product development while strengthening localisation in manufacturing.
Ashok Leyland has been expanding its presence in electric mobility, particularly in buses, as governments across emerging markets increase investments in clean public transport. At the same time, the company has built a portfolio of defence mobility solutions, supplying logistics and specialised vehicles to defence forces in multiple countries. The collaboration with PT Pindad is expected to leverage these capabilities while aligning with Indonesia's focus on strengthening domestic defence production.
PT Pindad, which operates under Indonesia's Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, plays a key role in supplying defence equipment and industrial products within the country. Its involvement in the partnership is expected to support compliance with local manufacturing requirements and strengthen integration with Indonesia's existing defence supply chain.
Amandeep Singh, President for International Operations, Defence, LCV and PSB at Ashok Leyland, stated that the partnership would enable the two companies to jointly develop products specifically suited to Indonesia's terrain, infrastructure and operational conditions. He added that working with a local partner such as Pindad would help ensure that solutions are aligned with both mobility and defence needs.
Industry observers note that collaborations between global commercial vehicle manufacturers and state-owned defence companies are becoming increasingly common, particularly in markets seeking technology transfer and localised production. The Ashok Leyland Pindad partnership reflects this trend, with a focus on electric mobility alongside defence applications.
Ashok Leyland continues to pursue international partnerships as part of its broader strategy to grow exports and overseas operations in electric vehicles and defence manufacturing, while supporting localisation in key markets.
