Greater Chennai Corporation has urged locals to pay their property taxes by the end of March to avoid a 2% penalty. More than 7 lakh persons have paid their property taxes since the general revision took effect in 2022 while almost 6 lakhs are yet to pay according to a statement from the civic body which asked the remaining taxpayers to do so.
The company stated that residents can pay their taxes directly on the local body's website or through postmen. Officials announced that a property tax enforcement effort would shortly be carried out and that they had thus far collected 1,240 crores in tax revenue for the fiscal year 2022–2023.
Even though a sizable portion of residents pays their property taxes online still the civic body's tax collectors continue to visit homes to collect roughly 50% of the levy. Tax collectors will soon be sent by the firm to collect taxes from the residents.
More than 200 locals recently petitioned the Madras high court to instruct the civic body to reverse its judgement after becoming enraged by the move to amend property tax.
However, the court chose to side with the corporation. Residents still don't seem to be aware of the issue as some believe they are exempt from paying because the case is still pending in court. An official from the corporation stated, "We will raise awareness about the court orders and launch field drives."
