Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has completed a successful diesel locomotive trial on a 13.15 km rail link connecting its coach manufacturing unit at Kazipet, Telangana, to the Indian Railways network. The new track links the facility directly to Kazipet Railway Station, enabling seamless movement of finished coaches across zones. Spread over 160 acres, the Railway Manufacturing Unit is nearing commissioning next month. The project includes key shop installations and green features such as rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient systems.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited has successfully carried out a diesel locomotive trial on the newly constructed 13.15 km rail line connecting its coach manufacturing unit at Kazipet in Telangana to the Indian Railways network. The line links the facility directly with Kazipet Railway Station, allowing coaches produced at the unit to move straight onto the national rail grid for dispatch to different railway zones and divisions.
With the completion of this trial, the Railway Manufacturing Unit (RMU) has been formally integrated with the operational rail system. The project is now moving towards commissioning, which is scheduled for next month. RVNL is executing the unit as the implementing agency to strengthen rolling stock production capacity.
The Kazipet facility is spread over nearly 160 acres and is positioned at a key junction under South Central Railway. Kazipet lies on the Balharshah-Secunderabad trunk route, forming part of the larger Delhi-Chennai corridor. This location ensures strong north-south and east-west connectivity, making the dispatch of newly built coaches more efficient and reducing logistical delays.
Infrastructure works inside the plant have progressed significantly. Installations in the main shop, paint shop and test shop have been completed, and machinery has been put in place. The unit has been designed to support large-scale coach manufacturing with streamlined internal rail connectivity.
The complex has also incorporated sustainable design elements. It includes a 2 MWp rooftop solar power plant with grid export capability, four rainwater harvesting ponds with a combined storage capacity of around 20 lakh litres, energy-efficient LED lighting systems and a modern sewage treatment plant. The use of Pre-Engineered Building structures has helped in faster construction and better natural lighting, while also lowering maintenance and energy use.
RVNL's Chairman and Managing Director, Saleem Ahmed, stated that the successful track linkage marks an important milestone in bringing the Kazipet unit closer to full operations. He added that the integration with the main railway network strengthens the country's rail manufacturing infrastructure and improves readiness for production.
The Kazipet coach manufacturing project has been planned as part of broader efforts to expand domestic rolling stock capacity and reduce dependence on limited production hubs. Once fully operational, the unit is expected to support Indian Railways' growing requirements for new coaches and replacements across regions.
