The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of a civil enclave at Srinagar airport at an estimated cost of INR 1,677 crore, marking a significant expansion of aviation infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Spread across 73.18 acres, the project includes construction of a new terminal building with a built-up area of 71,500 sq m. Once completed, the terminal is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and support an annual capacity of 10 million passengers. The approval was announced in New Delhi following the Cabinet meeting. The government stated that the project is expected to generate employment and catalyse further investment in the region, reinforcing the role of airport-led infrastructure in supporting economic activity and regional connectivity.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of a civil enclave at Srinagar airport with a total project cost of INR 1,677 crore, strengthening aviation infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and supporting future passenger growth in the region.
According to an official release, the proposed civil enclave will be developed over a land parcel measuring 73.18 acres. A new terminal building with a total built-up area of 71,500 sq m will be constructed as part of the project. The terminal has been planned to handle peak-hour traffic of 2,900 passengers and is designed for an annual passenger handling capacity of 10 million passengers.
The approval was announced in the national capital by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a briefing held after the Cabinet meeting. The clearance enables the project to move into the implementation phase, with detailed execution to be taken up by the relevant authorities.
The development of the civil enclave is expected to enhance the airport's operational efficiency and passenger handling capabilities, addressing capacity constraints and improving travel infrastructure in Srinagar. Airport-led development has increasingly been viewed as a catalyst for regional economic activity, particularly in sectors such as tourism, hospitality, logistics and allied services.
The government stated that the project is expected to generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. In addition, improved airport infrastructure is expected to support investment activity by enhancing connectivity and facilitating the movement of people and goods.
The Srinagar airport project forms part of a broader push to upgrade airport infrastructure across India, with an emphasis on improving capacity, passenger experience and regional access. Civil enclave developments typically integrate civilian aviation facilities within defence or joint-use airports, allowing for more efficient utilisation of land and existing infrastructure.
With passenger traffic projected to grow steadily in the coming years, the new terminal is expected to play a key role in accommodating future demand while supporting the region's long-term economic and urban development objectives.
