Synopsis

Survivors of the devastating Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides in Wayanad district, Kerala, have taken a significant step towards permanent resettlement by selecting new homes in a government-built township through an emotional draw of lots. In the first phase, 178 families who lost their homes in the disaster participated in the draw to choose plots and houses constructed under the township project at Elstone Estate, Kalpetta, designed to accommodate displaced families. Beneficiaries received coded slips indicating their allotted houses across multiple zones. Many expressed relief at securing permanent shelter after more than 18 months in rented accommodation, while some noted ongoing challenges in rebuilding livelihoods. The township development remains under construction, with formal handover of house keys scheduled in the coming weeks once infrastructure and finishing work is completed.

The first phase of housing allocation for survivors of the Wayanad landslides saw 178 families participate in a lottery-style draw to select homes within a specially developed rehabilitation township at Elstone Estate, near Kalpetta. The event was conducted using coded slips that identified specific zones and plot numbers, enabling beneficiaries to choose their houses, which form part of a larger project planned to accommodate hundreds of displaced residents.

Many participants expressed strong emotions upon receiving their allotments, a response shaped by the trauma of losing homes and relatives in the 2024 landslides and the prolonged period spent in rented accommodation. Some survivors highlighted that living in a permanent house offered a sense of stability and community after months of uncertainty.

The rehabilitation township comprises a total of 410 houses, with construction continuing across the site alongside supporting infrastructure such as roads and services. Officials have indicated that although the initial draw has taken place, beneficiaries will need to wait a few more weeks before moving in, as finishing work on homes and access infrastructure remains incomplete. Formal distribution of house keys by state officials is scheduled to occur later this month at a dedicated ceremony.

The housing draw forms part of a broader government initiative to resettle families displaced by the deadly Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides, which caused widespread destruction across Hilly areas of Wayanad. The project is being implemented under the state's rehabilitation policy, with the township designed to offer not just housing but a planned residential environment for affected communities. Financial and livelihood support measures have also been announced for those who lost businesses or means of income as a result of the disaster, complementing the housing allocations.

The rehabilitation and allotment efforts reflect ongoing work to provide long-term stability and community rebuilding for families whose homes were destroyed, even as construction and infrastructure development continue before full occupancy is possible.
