Synopsis

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata has launched a major INR 117.5 crore project to renovate its historic bascule bridge at the Kolkata Dock System. The upgrade aims to strengthen cargo evacuation, enhance road and maritime connectivity, and extend the bridge's lifespan. The bridge, nearly six decades old, will see modernisation of its electro-mechanical and structural systems. The central government has provided INR 40 crore under the Sagarmala Scheme, and the project is expected to be completed by May 2027, ensuring smoother cargo and traffic movement in the region.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has begun a significant renovation of its bascule bridge in the Kolkata Dock System to improve operational efficiency and cargo movement. The bridge, situated over the Hooghly riverfront, connects the Garden Reach Metiabruz area with central Kolkata. It plays a critical role in handling port traffic while also serving road commuters.

The bascule bridge, built in 1966 by Waagner Biro Bridge Systems AG, weighs approximately 1,640 tonnes and has been in service for nearly 60 years. Its double-leaf rolling mechanism allows it to open for vessels navigating between Kidderpore Dock I and Dock II and close for commercial vehicles and daily traffic. This dual function makes it essential for both maritime operations and road transport.

The renovation project, valued at INR 117.54 crore, includes modernising the bridge's electro-mechanical systems such as hydraulic gears, rack-and-pinion mechanisms, and other critical components. Structural strengthening will ensure the bridge continues to handle heavy cargo and road traffic safely. The upgrade is also expected to extend the service life of this important infrastructure.

SMPK signed an agreement with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited to oversee the project. Following a competitive tender process, Mumbai-based M/s H & H Fressinet was awarded the contract in late 2025. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has provided INR 40 crore under the Sagarmala Scheme to support this strategic infrastructure project.

Port officials explained that the modernisation will improve the flow of both maritime and road traffic, reduce operational delays, and enhance overall port efficiency. Once completed, the upgraded bridge will support regional trade and economic activity while maintaining the operational reliability of Kolkata's port system. The project is expected to be completed by May 2027, ensuring long-term benefits for the city and the eastern India region.
