SpiceJet has moved ahead with its expansion strategy by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to induct 10 additional aircraft. The airline has already doubled its available seat kilometres from 55 crore to 105 crore in the recent quarter and is aiming to scale this up to 220-225 crore in the winter schedule. With plans to operate over 300 flights daily and expand its fleet to around 60 aircraft, the carrier is focusing on restoring capacity, improving reliability and meeting rising passenger demand.
SpiceJet has secured a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the induction of 10 aircraft as part of its plan to increase operational capacity. The move is aligned with the airline's broader strategy to rebuild its fleet strength through a mix of wet leases, damp leases and the phased return of previously grounded aircraft.
In the last quarter, the airline significantly increased its available seat kilometres (ASKMs) from about 55 crore to 105 crore, effectively doubling its capacity. Building on this recovery, SpiceJet is targeting 220-225 crore ASKMs in the winter schedule. The airline has also outlined plans to operate more than 300 flights daily as capacity stabilises.
The board has approved a phased fleet expansion to nearly 60 aircraft. This includes leased planes as well as aircraft returning to service after maintenance and regulatory clearances. The airline has indicated that the approach is structured and calibrated, focusing on steady growth rather than aggressive expansion.
Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer of SpiceJet, stated that the recent rise in capacity marked an important milestone in the airline's recovery journey and that the MoU for 10 additional aircraft strengthens its ability to expand in a disciplined manner. He conveyed that the airline remains focused on restoring network strength and enhancing operational reliability.
SpiceJet had faced operational challenges over the past few years, including grounded aircraft due to financial stress and supply chain constraints affecting the aviation sector globally. In recent months, the airline has been working on resolving dues, restoring aircraft to service and rebuilding passenger confidence. The fresh induction of aircraft is expected to improve connectivity across key domestic routes and help meet sustained travel demand.
The airline's expansion also comes at a time when domestic air traffic in India continues to show steady growth, supported by improving passenger demand and network rationalisation among carriers. By increasing fleet size and daily flights, SpiceJet aims to strengthen its position in the competitive domestic aviation market while focusing on operational stability.
