Bangladesh has barred SpiceJet from using its airspace over pending dues, forcing the budget airline to reroute several flights, especially those operating from Kolkata to Guwahati and Imphal. Flight tracking data shows these services are taking longer alternative routes to avoid Bangladesh airspace. SpiceJet said it is in discussions with authorities regarding navigation-related charges and described the matter as a routine industry issue, adding that scheduled operations remain unaffected. The development comes amid financial pressure for the airline, which recently reported a quarterly loss of INR 269.27 crore, while its shares dipped nearly 1 per cent on the BSE.
Bangladesh has barred budget airline SpiceJet from using its airspace due to non-payment of pending dues, according to sources familiar with the matter. The restriction has forced the airline to reroute some of its flights, particularly those operating from Kolkata.
With access to Bangladesh airspace currently unavailable, certain SpiceJet services, including flights from Kolkata to Guwahati and Imphal, are taking longer routes to reach their destinations. Data from Flightradar24 on Thursday indicated that these flights were avoiding Bangladesh airspace and operating via alternative corridors.
When contacted, a SpiceJet spokesperson said the airline is in regular discussions with the relevant authorities regarding operational and procedural matters, including navigation-related charges.
These are routine industry issues and we are working constructively towards an early resolution. Our flight operations remain unaffected, and we continue to operate our scheduled services in line with regulatory requirements, the spokesperson said in a statement.
While the airline did not provide details about the dues, sources indicated that the action by Bangladesh authorities was linked to outstanding payments. The exact nature and amount of the pending dues could not be immediately confirmed.
An email sent to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) seeking clarification did not receive an immediate response.
The development comes at a time when the airline is navigating financial pressures. Last week, SpiceJet reported a loss of INR 269.27 crore for the quarter ended December 2025. The airline attributed the loss to higher operating costs and certain one-time expenses that impacted its financial performance.
In afternoon trade on Thursday, shares of SpiceJet were down nearly 1 per cent at INR 16.81 apiece on the BSE.
Despite the airspace restriction, the airline has stated that its scheduled services continue to operate and that efforts are underway to resolve the issue with the concerned authorities.
