Synopsis

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd has commissioned a 71 MW solar power plant in Prayagraj, strengthening its renewable energy portfolio. The facility, spread over 210 acres, is expected to generate about 103.61 million units of green electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 75,150 tonnes each year. Power from the plant will be supplied to BPCL's refineries in Mumbai, Bina and Kochi. The project supports the company's target of achieving net zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2040.

State-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd has commissioned a 71 MW solar power project in Prayagraj, adding a significant renewable asset to its energy portfolio as it advances its clean energy transition. The project marks another step in BPCL's broader plan to reduce dependence on conventional power sources and lower the carbon footprint of its core operations.

The solar facility has an installed capacity of 71 MWp (DC) and 52 MW (AC). It is expected to generate around 103.61 million units of green electricity every year. According to the company, this output will help cut carbon emissions by nearly 75,150 tonnes annually, an impact comparable to planting about 1.25 crore trees.

Developed across nearly 210 acres, the plant uses about 1.29 lakh solar modules. Construction involved roughly 1,324 metric tonnes of structural steel and close to 294 kilometres of cabling. The project is connected to the power grid through a 132 kV transmission line, enabling stable evacuation of electricity.

The renewable power generated from the Prayagraj facility will be supplied to BPCL's refineries in Mumbai, Bina and Kochi. This is expected to support cleaner refinery operations and reduce the overall carbon intensity of fuel production, which remains central to BPCL's business.

BPCL currently operates three oil refineries with a combined capacity of around 35.3 million tonnes per annum. Its retail network includes more than 23,500 fuel stations, over 6,200 LPG distributorships and 79 aviation service stations across the country. Over the past few years, the company has also expanded its presence in new energy segments, including electric mobility.

As part of its long-term sustainability roadmap, BPCL aims to become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040 for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. It has already installed electric vehicle charging facilities at more than 6,500 fuel stations nationwide, alongside investments in solar, wind and other low-carbon initiatives.
