FedEx has announced a plan to invest over INR 2,500 crore in developing a 300,000 sq ft fully automated cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings. Designed as a regional consolidation and redistribution centre, the facility will leverage the airport's multimodal infrastructure to strengthen western India's trade corridor. The hub is expected to create over 6,000 jobs, support high-value and time-sensitive cargo, and enhance trade connectivity across key global markets while aligning with the airport's phased cargo capacity expansion plans.
Express transportation major FedEx has announced plans to invest over INR 2,500 crore to develop a fully automated cargo hub spanning around 300,000 sq ft at Navi Mumbai International Airport. The proposed facility is planned as a regional consolidation and redistribution hub and will be developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.
The announcement followed a ground-breaking ceremony held at the airport's cargo terminal site, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior leadership from FedEx, and Jeet Adani. The hub is designed to leverage the airport's multimodal infrastructure to strengthen western India's international trade corridor.
According to the company, once the facility becomes operational, it is expected to generate more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, warehousing, transportation, and allied services. The investment supports a long-term plan to expand FedEx's capacity in India's largest international trade corridor and reinforce its position as an integrated logistics and trade gateway for western India.
Adani Airport Holdings highlighted that the development aligns with the airport's broader vision of building integrated infrastructure to enhance India's trade competitiveness. The airport's proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, key industrial corridors, and multimodal transport networks is expected to support high-growth export sectors while strengthening Maharashtra's role as a global logistics hub.
The cargo hub will be equipped with advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening technology, and dedicated aircraft parking bays. These features are intended to enable simultaneous processing of inbound and outbound shipments, improve routing flexibility, and provide more predictable transit times, particularly for high-value and time-sensitive goods such as electronics, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, and perishables.
FedEx leadership noted that India's growing role in global trade will increasingly depend on the reliability and speed of logistics infrastructure. By establishing the hub at Navi Mumbai, the company aims to integrate its global network with one of India's fastest-growing trade corridors, offering greater efficiency and certainty to customers.
The facility is also expected to support trade flows across Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States. Improved reliability and faster turnaround times are likely to benefit micro, small, and medium enterprises by strengthening export-import capabilities and contributing to lower logistics costs.
Navi Mumbai International Airport has outlined plans to commence cargo operations with an initial annual handling capacity of about 0.5 million metric tonnes, which is proposed to be expanded in phases to nearly 3.25 million metric tonnes at full development. This expansion supports the airport's long-term strategy to position the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as one of India's most advanced air freight and logistics gateways.
