Synopsis

The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority has proposed a coastal corridor connecting Visakhapatnam with the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport as part of its revised draft master plan. The planned road, largely aligned along the coastline, is intended to improve regional connectivity while supporting future urban and economic expansion. The draft also incorporates long-term development proposals suggested by national policy bodies, covering tourism, IT, education, and healthcare zones. The authority has invited public feedback on the revised plan before it is finalised.

The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority) has placed a revised draft master plan in the public domain that includes a proposed coastal corridor linking Visakhapatnam to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport (Bhogapuram International Airport). The corridor has been planned as a key access route to the airport and is expected to play a role in shaping development along the northern coastal belt.

According to the draft, the coastal road will stretch for around 45 kilometres. Its width is proposed at about 40 metres closer to Visakhapatnam and will gradually increase to around 60 metres as it approaches Bhogapuram. Most of the alignment is planned along the beachfront, although certain portions will shift inland to address terrain constraints and existing developments.

Near the Rushikonda area, the plan provides for an elevated stretch of approximately one kilometre. This design has been included to avoid acquiring land belonging to a star-category hotel in the area, while still maintaining continuity of the coastal corridor. Officials indicated that this approach balances infrastructure needs with existing tourism assets.

While the corridor has been incorporated into the master plan by VMRDA, the execution is expected to be taken up by the National Highways Authority of India (National Highways Authority of India). Including the road alignment at the planning stage is aimed at preventing future land-use conflicts and ensuring smoother coordination between agencies during implementation.

The draft master plan also reflects recommendations made by NITI Aayog (NITI Aayog) for the Visakhapatnam Economic Region. These include proposals for Bay City development between Kailasagiri and Bheemili, the Vizag 2.0 urban expansion towards Bhogapuram, and the creation of IT clusters at Madhurawada, Anandapuram, and Kapuluppada.

In addition, the plan earmarks areas for an education and skilling hub near IIM Visakhapatnam and a specialised health city close to Bhogapuram. These zones are intended to support employment generation and diversify economic activity alongside airport-led growth.

VMRDA had earlier prepared a master plan covering parts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Anakapalli districts, spanning over 4,300 square kilometres. That plan was later taken up for revision following concerns over land-use allocations. The current draft is part of that review process, and public suggestions have been invited before the plan is finalised.
