Synopsis

The Lucknow Metro has introduced a QR code-based ticketing system that allows commuters to book metro tickets through a mobile app and at stations, aiming to simplify travel and reduce queues. Launched at Hazratganj Metro Station by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) Managing Director, the system enables passengers to book tickets via the official Lucknow Metro Official mobile application on Android and iOS, or obtain printed QR tickets at ticket vending machines (TVMs) and counters across all stations. Once booked, tickets can be scanned at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates marked with yellow strips for entry and exit. Additional features include UPI payment support at QR-enabled machines, while traditional token services remain available on other TVMs. Officials described the initiative as a step toward digital, faster and more convenient urban travel.

The Lucknow Metro, operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), has rolled out a new QR code-based ticketing system that enables commuters to book and use tickets digitally, significantly simplifying the metro travel experience in the city.

The system was formally inaugurated at Hazratganj Metro Station by UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, marking a key step in the metro's efforts to adopt smarter and more user-friendly ticketing solutions.

Under the upgraded ticketing framework, passengers can purchase QR tickets through the official Lucknow Metro Official mobile application, which is available on both Android and iOS platforms. Booking through the mobile app allows users to receive a digital QR ticket directly on their smartphones, enabling a seamless entry and exit at metro stations without the need for physical tokens or cards.

In addition to the mobile booking facility, commuters can also obtain paper-based QR tickets at designated ticket counters and newly installed QR-enabled ticket vending machines (TVMs) at each station. To support the new system, UPMRC has equipped all metro stations with at least one QR-supported TVM and one QR-compatible ticket counter. These machines not only issue QR tickets but also accept UPI payments, enhancing digital convenience for commuters.

Once a ticket is booked either digitally or as a printed QR code passengers are required to scan the code at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates marked with yellow strips when entering and exiting the metro. Scanning at both entry and exit points is compulsory for validating the journey.

Despite the introduction of QR code ticketing, traditional token-based ticketing will continue to be available through other vending machines at stations, ensuring inclusivity for all types of passengers and preferences. Special QR Support stickers have been placed on the machines and counters offering the QR service to help commuters easily identify them.

Officials described the launch as a significant milestone in the journey of Lucknow Metro towards digital transformation and enhanced passenger convenience. The initiative aligns with the broader Digital India vision, under which public services are increasingly made accessible via digital platforms and mobile devices.

Looking ahead, UPMRC has indicated plans to integrate the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) facility, which would allow commuters to use a single mobility card across multiple metro systems that support NCMC, following models already seen in cities such as Kanpur and Agra.

The rollout of QR code ticketing by Lucknow Metro is expected to improve commuter experience, reduce queues at stations, promote cashless payments and attract more users to public transport by offering faster, simpler and flexible travel options.
