Synopsis

Amazon Web Services India (AWS India) and Yotta Data Services will collaborate to deploy a hybrid cloud infrastructure for the National Informatics Centre's (NIC) Meghraj 2.0 initiative, aimed at strengthening digital governance in the country. Meghraj, also known as the GI Cloud, seeks to accelerate delivery of e-services through cloud computing. Under the partnership, AWS India will work with Yotta to implement AWS Outposts within NIC data centres, enabling government departments to leverage advanced AWS services including generative artificial intelligence while meeting data residency and security requirements. The solution will allow sensitive workloads to remain within NIC facilities, while providing elastic scalability by connecting to AWS Regions in India during peak demand periods, ensuring seamless performance for citizen-facing services and mission-critical applications.

Amazon Web Services India Pvt Ltd (AWS India) has partnered with Yotta Data Services to deploy a hybrid cloud infrastructure for the National Informatics Centre's (NIC) Meghraj 2.0 initiative, strengthening the country's digital public service delivery framework.

The Government of India's GI Cloud, branded as Meghraj, is designed to accelerate the adoption of cloud computing across ministries and departments to enhance the efficiency, scalability and accessibility of e-governance services. The next phase, Meghraj 2.0, focuses on modernising infrastructure to meet growing digital demand while maintaining stringent data security and residency standards.

Under the collaboration, AWS India will work with Yotta Data Services to deploy AWS Outposts within NIC data centres. AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that extends AWS infrastructure, services and tools to on-premises environments. This arrangement will enable government departments to access AWS's advanced cloud capabilities, including analytics and generative artificial intelligence services, while ensuring that sensitive workloads remain hosted within NIC's secure facilities.

The hybrid cloud setup addresses a critical requirement for public sector entities maintaining data sovereignty and compliance with national security norms. Applications that must reside in NIC data centres due to regulatory or security considerations will continue to operate on-premises. At the same time, during periods of high demand for citizen-facing services, these applications will be able to expand seamlessly to AWS Regions in India.

According to the company release, the solution allows workloads to scale elastically beyond on-premises capacity constraints. For example, during peak demand scenarios, applications can leverage AWS cloud infrastructure for data ingestion and processing, with data synchronised back to NIC data centres within hours. This ensures service continuity, faster response times and improved user experience without compromising security protocols.

AWS India undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in the country, while Yotta Data Services operates as a cloud infrastructure and platform services provider with a focus on hyperscale data centre and managed cloud solutions. Their collaboration combines global cloud capabilities with domestic infrastructure expertise to support India's expanding digital ecosystem.

The initiative is expected to enhance resilience and scalability for government platforms that handle high volumes of citizen interactions, including welfare schemes, taxation, healthcare and public information systems. By integrating hybrid cloud architecture into Meghraj 2.0, the government aims to future-proof its digital backbone and support the growing adoption of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in governance.
