The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has initiated an e-auction process to lease more than 100 commercial properties across key locations in the city as part of efforts to unlock revenue, optimise utilisation of public assets and promote business activity. The properties being offered include booths in the Sector 17 commercial precinct, kiosks in the Mauli Jagran market, shops in underpass areas between Sectors 17 and 22, nurseries at multiple sites, and the Smart City office building in Sector 17, with reserve rents set according to location and built-in amenities. Prices vary widely from lower-value booths to high-rent potential for the Smart City office block and several booths have had base rents adjusted after limited bidder interest. The e-auction drive is expected to conclude over the next week to 10 days as remaining sites are listed and bids close.
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has commenced an e-auction process to lease out more than 100 commercially zoned properties across the Union Territory, officials said earlier this week. The initiative is part of a broader municipal strategy to generate revenue from under-utilised assets and support business activity in prominent city locations.
The list of properties being offered includes 39 commercial booths in the busy Sector 17 retail and office precinct, 40 kiosks in the Mauli Jagran market, multiple booths in the underpass between Sectors 17 and 22, seven nursery sites at various locations, and the Smart City office building located in Sector 17. These properties have been put up on the e-auction platform with reserve rents that vary by category and location.
Reserve rents for individual booths and kiosks are set according to market appeal and footfall, while the Smart City office building carries a significantly higher reserve rent in the range of INR 30-35 lakh per month. Lower-value sites such as booths in underpass areas and Mauli Jagran have comparatively modest base rents, with some starting at around INR 5,000 per month. Authorities said that in response to limited bidder interest in earlier rounds, the base rent for over a dozen underpass booths was reduced by about 20 % to attract more competitive bids.
Municipal officials noted that certain properties, such as the nursery sites and remaining Mauli Jagran booths, are nearing completion of documentation and are expected to be e-auctioned within the next seven to ten days alongside the other listed assets. Successful bidders will be able to lease the properties on existing terms and carry out repairs or fit-outs at their own cost, with the leases governed by applicable municipal and estate rules.
The e-auction drive is part of a wider effort by the city administration to rationalise the use of government-owned land and buildings, encouraging private sector participation in commercial activity while boosting municipal revenues. Such e-auction exercises are increasingly being used by urban authorities to promote transparency, expand leasing opportunities and ensure optimal utilisation of prime commercial assets.
