Nashik Road-Dwarka 10-lane widening plan gains approval from commuters

Synopsis

Daily travellers on the Pune highway between Nashik Road and Dwarka have welcomed a proposal to widen the key urban stretch to 10 lanes, saying it could ease persistent congestion at frequent bottlenecks such as Dwarka junction, Kathe Galli, Fame signal, Upnagar and Datta Mandir. The plan includes constructing a grade separator at Dwarka to improve traffic flow and reduce pressure on alternate routes. Commuters also raised concerns about heavy-vehicle movement and suggested a truck bypass to offer longer-term relief. Traffic officials acknowledged that current infrastructure is not sufficient for current demand.

Daily commuters on the busy Pune highway stretch connecting Nashik Road and Dwarka have expressed approval for a government plan to widen the route to 10 lanes, seeing it as a needed improvement to long-standing congestion problems. Persistent traffic jams at points such as the Dwarka junction, Kathe Galli, Fame signal, Upnagar and Datta Mandir have left motorists dealing with slow movement and frequent delays.

A central part of the proposal is building a grade separator at the Dwarka junction. Residents explained that many drivers currently divert to the Kathe Galli-Mumbai Naka route to avoid congestion at the main junction. They expect that with a grade separator in place, more vehicles will stay on the main highway, easing secondary pressure on nearby roads.

Motorists also noted that even small disruptions along the stretch, such as a bus or truck breaking down between Sinnar Phata and Dwarka, can quickly lead to one- to two-kilometre tailbacks because the existing road lacks capacity to absorb stopped traffic. Commuters pointed out that between the Upnagar junction and Dr Ambedkar Nagar, a single breakdown often leaves only one usable lane for moving traffic, worsening delays.

Officials from the city's traffic branch agreed that the current highway infrastructure is inadequate to support growing vehicle volumes on this urban corridor, underlining the need for wider lanes and improved flow. They acknowledged that the planned expansion would boost capacity and help reduce congestion at the most troubled points.

Beyond widening the road, many commuters highlighted the heavy movement of trucks as a major factor in daily traffic slowdowns. They said that while extending the road to 10 lanes is a positive step, establishing an alternative bypass for trucks travelling between Sinnar and Dwarka could offer a more lasting easing of traffic pressure on the main urban link.

Looking ahead, authorities have also been focusing on related infrastructure plans in the region. In recent months, discussions around asphalting and widening related stretches of the Nashik-Pune highway to 10 lanes have been underway, with adjustments to surface materials and projected costs aimed at speeding delivery ahead of major events such as the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
