Synopsis

The detailed project report for the proposed Tirupattur Hosur railway line in Tamil Nadu has been submitted to the Centre, with the project estimated at INR 4,000 crore. The 109 km line via Jolarpet plans six new stations and train speeds of up to 130 kmph. Around 400 acres of land will be acquired across Tirupattur and Krishnagiri districts. The proposal is aimed at improving connectivity to the fast-growing Hosur industrial belt and reviving long-pending regional rail infrastructure.

The detailed project report for the proposed Tirupattur Hosur railway line in Tamil Nadu has been formally submitted to the Centre, marking a key step in advancing the long-pending rail connectivity plan. The project, estimated to cost around INR 4,000 crore, envisages a new 109 km rail corridor running via Jolarpet, aimed at strengthening links between Tirupattur, Krishnagiri and Hosur.

According to officials, the proposed alignment includes six new railway stations at Kandili, Bargur, Krishnagiri, Polupalli, Chinnar and Shoolagiri. The line has been designed to support train operations at speeds of up to 130 kmph, in line with modern standards being adopted by Indian Railways for new routes. Once approved, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between industrial and commercial centres in this part of Tamil Nadu.

Land acquisition will form a major component of the project. Around 64.435 acres are to be acquired in Tirupattur district, while approximately 335.69 acres will be required in Krishnagiri district. Officials have clarified that construction activities, including track laying and station works, will begin only after the Centre allocates the required funds based on the DPR assessment.

The need for the rail line was discussed in detail during a coordination meeting held in Krishnagiri, which was attended by railway officials, state government representatives, industrial associations and traders. Participants highlighted that rapid industrial growth in the Hosur region has led to increased movement of workers and goods, creating sustained demand for a direct rail connection linking Hosur with interior districts such as Tirupattur and Dharmapuri.

The proposal also carries historical significance. A narrow-gauge railway line connecting Tirupattur and Krishnagiri via Bargur existed earlier but was shut down during the World War II period, along with several similar lines across the country. The new project is seen as an effort to restore rail connectivity in a region that has remained underserved for decades despite its economic potential.
