The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has approved an INR 62.79 crore proposal to repair four ageing railway overbridges in the eastern part of the city after technical inspections flagged structural distress. The decision follows expert recommendations highlighting damaged bearings and reduced structural gaps that require immediate attention. The bridges, built between the mid-1980s and late-1990s, will be taken up for phased repairs to ensure commuter safety and extend their service life. The move aligns with wider safety checks initiated across Gujarat after recent bridge failures elsewhere.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has approved a repair and strengthening plan costing INR 62.79 crore for four ageing railway overbridges located in eastern Ahmedabad. The proposal was cleared by the civic body's road and building committee after a consultant's inspection report pointed to structural distress in key components of the bridges.
According to the assessment, the structures showed signs of ageing, including damaged bearings and minimal clearance between pedestal tops and girder bottoms. Civic officials noted that these issues could affect long-term stability if left unattended, making repairs necessary from a safety standpoint. The approved works will focus on restoring load-bearing elements and improving structural performance without altering the existing alignment of the bridges.
The four overbridges identified for repairs include the Girdharnagar railway overbridge, which is around 40 years old, the Chamunda railway overbridge at about 35 years, the Cadila railway overbridge at roughly 29 years, and the Nathalal Jhagda railway overbridge, which is approximately 27 years old. All four play an important role in connecting residential and industrial areas across railway lines and carry heavy daily traffic.
Civic officials said the repair works will be carried out in phases to reduce disruption to traffic movement. The bridges were inspected as part of AMC's regular monitoring process, under which consultants conduct checks twice every year, once before the monsoon and once after, to identify structural issues and recommend corrective measures.
The approval comes amid heightened attention on bridge safety across Gujarat following the collapse of the Gambhira bridge near Vadodara, which prompted authorities to review the condition of older bridges across urban and highway networks. AMC officials indicated that the current proposal is part of this broader effort to ensure ageing infrastructure is addressed in time.
