The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is nearing full commissioning, with the remaining sections set for inauguration later this month. The 82 km corridor, India's first semi highspeed RRTS, has been opened in phases since October 2023 and already carries over 22 million passenger trips. The final segments include a 5 km Delhi stretch and a 21 km Meerut extension, which will also support Meerut Metro services on shared tracks. The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated INR 1 crore in the 2026-27 budget to manage operational costs, reflecting strong state support for the project.
The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), is expected to be fully operational later this month with the inauguration of its remaining segments. According to an NCRTC official, the final approvals are in their last stages, allowing the complete rollout of the 82 km semi high speed corridor connecting Delhi with Meerut. The corridor includes 16 stations and has been commissioned in phases since October 2023.
Currently, a 55 km section from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi to Meerut South is operational, covering 11 stations and recording over 22 million passenger trips. The remaining segments, a 5 km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and a 21 km extension from Meerut South to Modipuram, are ready for commissioning. The corridor will also allow Meerut Metro services to operate on shared tracks, the first integration of regional and metro trains in India.
The Uttar Pradesh government has provided financial support, allocating INR 1 crore in the 2026-27 state budget to offset early operational losses, categorised as loans for urban development. The total cost of building the corridor is INR 30,274 crore. The first 17 km priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in October 2023, followed by phased extensions in March 2024, August 2024, and January 2025.
With the final stretch scheduled for inauguration by the Prime Minister on February 22, the full corridor will significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut. This development is expected to enhance daily commuting, improve regional connectivity, and integrate long-distance and local transport networks effectively.
