US-based semiconductor equipment major KLA Corporation has committed an investment of USD 400 million (around INR 3,600 crore) to establish its global research and development and innovation hub in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa announced. The 12-acre campus is expected to generate 4,000 high-skilled jobs and become KLA's largest integrated R&D facility outside its global headquarters. The MoU was signed with Guidance Tamil Nadu in the presence of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. The facility will focus on advanced research in high-performance computing, AI-driven semiconductor innovation and process control engineering software, reinforcing Tamil Nadu's ambition to build a robust semiconductor ecosystem.
US-based global technology leader KLA Corporation has committed an investment of INR 3,600 crore in Tamil Nadu to establish its global research and development (R&D) and innovation hub in Chennai, marking a significant boost to the state's semiconductor ambitions.
Announcing the development on Friday, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa said the company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state government's investment promotion agency, to invest USD 400 million (approximately INR 3,600 crore) in the project.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister M K Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Secretariat in Chennai. Sharing details in a social media post, Rajaa described KLA as one of the big three in semiconductor manufacturing design, research and development, and said the investment underscores the state's growing prominence in the global electronics value chain.
The planned 12-acre campus will be developed as KLA's Global Research and Development and Innovation Hub, with a potential built-up capacity of up to 1.5 million square feet. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate around 4,000 high-skilled jobs, contributing significantly to Tamil Nadu's technology workforce.
According to Rajaa, the Chennai unit will support advanced research in high-performance computing, process control engineering software and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven semiconductor innovation. The facility will also focus on developing solutions that enhance precision and efficiency in semiconductor manufacturing processes.
When fully developed, this facility will be KLA's largest integrated R&D facility present outside its global headquarters, Rajaa said, adding that the investment reflects the company's confidence in Tamil Nadu's governance, policy clarity, stability and deep engineering talent pool.
The California-headquartered KLA Corporation develops industry-leading equipment and services that enable innovation across the electronics sector. The company provides advanced process control and process-enabled solutions for integrated circuits, semiconductor packaging and printed circuit boards, among other technologies.
The investment is expected to further strengthen Tamil Nadu's push to build a long-term semiconductor ecosystem anchored in research, advanced engineering and skilled talent. The state government has been actively courting global semiconductor and electronics firms as part of its strategy to position Tamil Nadu as a major hub for high-technology manufacturing and innovation.
With this announcement, Chennai is set to emerge as a critical node in KLA's global R&D network, reinforcing India's growing role in the global semiconductor value chain.
