The Centre has created agricultural infrastructure worth INR 1 lakh crore to preserve fruits, vegetables and other farm produce, helping reduce post-harvest losses by 5-15 per cent, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told the Rajya Sabha. He said thousands of facilities including custom hiring centres, primary processing units, warehouses, grading units, cold storages and smart agriculture infrastructure have been established to strengthen storage and value chains. Targeting the previous Congress-led government for inaction, he credited Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for prioritising farm infrastructure. In a written reply, Chouhan said that under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), INR 7,425.99 crore has been sanctioned for 32,014 projects in Punjab as of February 9, 2026, against a revised allocation of INR 9,050 crore based on the state's performance.
The government has created agricultural infrastructure worth INR 1 lakh crore to preserve fruits, vegetables and other farm produce, resulting in a 5-15 per cent reduction in post-harvest losses, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour, the minister criticised the previous Congress-led government for allegedly failing to develop preservation infrastructure for farm produce. He said the current government prioritised the creation of large-scale facilities to strengthen storage and supply chains.
Chouhan listed the infrastructure developed so far, including 44,243 custom hiring centres, 25,854 primary processing centres, 25,565 farm harvest automation units, 17,779 warehouses, 4,200 grading units, 3,549 smart agriculture infrastructure projects and 2,827 cold storage facilities.
He said the creation of this infrastructure has significantly reduced damage to fruits, vegetables and other perishable produce, enabling better storage and improving returns for farmers.
The minister also underlined that the government's approach to agriculture is aimed at national rebuilding and farmer welfare, asserting that efforts are focused on building a self-reliant and developed India.
In a written reply, Chouhan said the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) is a demand-driven Central Sector scheme with uniform operational guidelines applicable across states, including Punjab.
As of February 9, 2026, INR 7,425.99 crore has been sanctioned for 32,014 projects in Punjab under the AIF scheme. He noted that Punjab's initial requirement under the scheme was assessed at INR 4,713 crore based on agricultural output ratios and was later increased to INR 9,050 crore due to improved performance.
The response was given to a question raised by AAP MP Vikramjit Singh Sawhney regarding agricultural infrastructure development in Punjab.
