Synopsis

Nashik's Ozar airport is set to undergo a major infrastructure upgrade costing INR 572 crore to handle the sharp rise in passenger movement expected during the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The project includes a new terminal building, expanded aircraft parking, additional check-in counters, and improved passenger facilities. Once completed, the airport's passenger handling capacity will increase more than threefold. The upgrade is part of wider preparations to strengthen transport infrastructure in and around Nashik ahead of the large religious gathering.

The Ozar airport in Nashik is slated for a significant capacity and infrastructure upgrade as part of preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which is expected to draw a large number of pilgrims and visitors to the city. The project, with an estimated cost of INR 572 crore, has been approved to ensure the airport can manage a substantial increase in air traffic during the event.

The expansion plan includes the construction of a new terminal building with a built-up area of about 45,000 square metres. This terminal will be designed to handle nearly 1,000 passengers per hour, compared to the current capacity of around 300 passengers per hour. The upgraded terminal will have 24 check-in counters, four conveyor belts for baggage handling, and improved arrival and departure areas to ease passenger movement.

In addition to the terminal, the project covers expansion of the aircraft apron to allow parking for more planes at a time. This is expected to help airlines schedule additional flights during peak travel periods linked to the Kumbh Mela. A new parking area for vehicles, aerobridges, and upgraded security infrastructure are also part of the plan, aimed at improving overall operational efficiency.

The airport is currently operated by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and handles limited commercial flight operations. In the past, flight services from Nashik have remained constrained due to infrastructure limitations, despite steady demand from religious tourism, industry, and agriculture-linked trade in the region. The upcoming upgrade is expected to address several of these long-standing constraints.

Authorities have indicated that the work is planned to be completed well before the start of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela to allow sufficient time for operational testing and coordination with airlines. The airport project is being taken up alongside other infrastructure works in Nashik, including road connectivity and civic upgrades, to manage the expected inflow of visitors.
