Synopsis

Andhra Pradesh has moved ahead with plans to set up a large shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Machilipatnam as part of its maritime infrastructure expansion. The project will be developed through a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer model, with private participation invited through a competitive bidding process. The state maritime board has completed internal approvals for issuing the request for proposals. The facility is expected to strengthen coastal industrial activity, generate employment, and support the state&s long-term port-led development strategy.

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the development of a modern shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Machilipatnam, marking a key step in strengthening the state's maritime and coastal industrial base. The project will be implemented by the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board through a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer framework, with the aim of attracting experienced private players with technical and financial capability.

Internal approvals for the project have already been completed. A Tender Evaluation Committee, along with the engineering procurement contractor, has cleared the draft request for proposals, and the Maritime Board's chief executive officer has been authorised to initiate the bidding process. This clears the way for formal market participation and selection of a developer for the facility.

The proposed shipbuilding and repair yard is expected to cater to commercial vessels and related maritime requirements. It is positioned as a long-term industrial asset that can support port operations, coastal shipping, and allied services. The project is also seen as a step towards reducing dependence on ship repair facilities outside the state.

Local political leadership has described the project as a long-pending demand for the Machilipatnam region. According to the area's Member of Parliament, the facility has the potential to generate significant employment and stimulate the growth of ancillary industries, including fabrication, engineering services, logistics, and skill development.

Andhra Pradesh has a coastline of over 1,050 km and has been actively promoting port-led development through investments in ports, connectivity, and maritime infrastructure. The Machilipatnam shipbuilding project aligns with this broader strategy and complements other port and industrial initiatives being taken up along the coast.

Supporting infrastructure is also being strengthened in the region. The Centre has approved funding for a six-lane external connectivity road for Machilipatnam port, aimed at improving access to national highways and easing cargo movement. Together, these developments are expected to improve the overall viability of large maritime projects in the area.
