The Tamil Nadu government has rejected the Union Railway Minister's claim that delays in land acquisition by the State have slowed railway projects. The State said most land for major railway lines has already been acquired and handed over, and delays are mainly due to inadequate fund release and project abandonment by Indian Railways. It also denied seeking the closure of any railway projects. The issue has triggered political exchanges, with both sides presenting differing accounts of project progress and responsibility.
The Tamil Nadu government has firmly denied allegations by the Union Railway Minister that delays in land acquisition by the State have stalled railway projects. The State government stated that the claim does not reflect the actual status on the ground and clarified that land acquisition for most sanctioned railway projects has already been substantially completed.
The State Transport Minister said that in several key railway projects, more than 90 percent of the required land has been acquired and handed over to Indian Railways. He added that the remaining portions are either under final stages of acquisition or face procedural issues beyond the State's control. According to the State, project delays are primarily due to limited fund releases and slow execution by Indian Railways rather than land-related hurdles.
The government also rejected suggestions that it had requested the abandonment of certain railway lines. It clarified that Tamil Nadu has consistently pursued the completion of sanctioned projects and has written multiple times to railway authorities seeking clarity on funding commitments and construction timelines. The State maintained that dropping or slowing projects without adequate explanation has contributed significantly to delays.
The issue follows earlier statements from the Union Railway Minister, who had said that land acquisition in Tamil Nadu was lagging and had impacted projects such as the Madurai-Thoothukudi and Tindivanam-Gingee-Tiruvannamalai lines. In response, the State reiterated that most land for these corridors has already been transferred and that execution slowed after funds were not released as expected.
Political reactions have also surfaced, with opposition leaders blaming the State government for delays, while the ruling party accused the Centre of shifting responsibility. The disagreement has brought renewed focus on coordination between the Centre and the State in delivering large infrastructure projects.
