Delhi authorities have identified 3,298 km of roads for repair and resurfacing under a phased redevelopment plan estimated at INR 7,207 crore. The assessment covers over 21 per cent of the city's total road network of 15,598 km and includes roads in both authorised and unauthorised colonies. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Public Works Department account for the largest share of identified stretches. Officials have linked damaged road surfaces to higher dust levels and traffic inefficiencies, prompting renewed focus on timely execution.
A comprehensive Road Redevelopment Action Plan has flagged 3,298 km of Delhi's road network for repair and resurfacing, accounting for more than one-fifth of the city's total 15,598 km of roads. The findings were placed before the Delhi chief minister as part of a broader review of infrastructure conditions and their impact on mobility and air quality.
The proposed redevelopment programme involves an estimated investment of INR 7,207 crore and is planned to be executed in phases. Of the total stretches identified, around 2,298 km fall within authorised colonies, while nearly 1,000 km are located in unauthorised areas. Officials have indicated that internal colony roads and connecting streets form a large part of the network requiring immediate attention due to surface damage and uneven maintenance over the years.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which manages the largest road network in the city at about 6,127.8 km, has the highest absolute length marked for redevelopment at nearly 1,202 km. These roads typically serve dense residential and commercial pockets and often experience heavy daily traffic, accelerating wear and tear.
For major and arterial roads under the Public Works Department, more than half of its 1,404 km network, or about 788 km, has been identified for redevelopment. Other agencies with roads included in the plan are the Delhi Development Authority with 111.7 km, DSIIDC with 63 km, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department with 27.4 km, and the National Highways Authority of India with 69 km. Roads under the New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Cantonment Board and Central Public Works Department are not part of the current list.
Officials have pointed out that damaged roads contribute significantly to dust generation, which worsens air pollution, and also slow down vehicle movement, leading to higher fuel consumption. Road repair work had faced interruptions in the past due to restrictions under pollution control measures and extreme weather conditions. However, most stalled projects have now resumed.
The Public Works Department has already completed redevelopment work on over 150 km of roads, with close to 400 km currently under execution. Repairs on nearly 600 km are expected to be completed by next year as part of the ongoing programme.
