Synopsis

The Nashik Municipal Corporation is moving ahead with plans to upgrade a 6.4 km city stretch of the Nashik-Pune highway from Dwarka Circle to Nashik Road by opting for asphalting instead of white topping. The decision, taken after consultations with the National Highways Authority of India, is aimed at ensuring timely completion before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2026. The revised project scope has reduced the estimated cost from INR 290 crore to INR 245 crore, including land acquisition, while maintaining the objective of easing congestion on one of the city's busiest corridors.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has revised its road improvement plans for a key section of the Nashik-Pune highway that passes through the city, narrowing the focus to a 6.4 km stretch between Dwarka Circle and the Nashik Road boundary. The stretch is now proposed to be asphalted, replacing the earlier plan of white topping, in order to ensure faster execution ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled in 2026.

The change in approach followed detailed discussions between NMC officials and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Delhi. During these meetings, senior NHAI officials advised that asphalting would be more practical under the limited time available, allowing work to progress without delays linked to longer construction cycles. Acting on this guidance, the civic body revised its proposal accordingly.

Earlier, NMC had submitted a broader plan to widen and upgrade nearly 9 km of the highway, which included increasing the road width from six lanes to 10 lanes along with white topping. That proposal was estimated to cost around INR 290 crore, inclusive of land acquisition. Under the revised plan, the project cost has been reduced to about INR 245 crore, while still accounting for land acquisition expenses.

The Dwarka Circle Nashik Road stretch forms a crucial urban link carrying heavy daily traffic, including private vehicles, public transport, and commercial movement towards Pune, Shirdi, and industrial areas around Sinnar. Persistent congestion on this corridor has been a long-standing concern for commuters and traders operating along the route. Officials expect that widening and resurfacing the road will improve traffic flow and enhance carrying capacity once the work is completed.

Final approval from the NHAI is awaited, after which the project is expected to be taken up on priority. The highway upgrade is part of a wider set of infrastructure measures being planned in Nashik to manage the sharp rise in traffic and visitor movement anticipated during the Kumbh Mela. Civic and state agencies are also reviewing connectivity, traffic diversion, and support infrastructure to ensure smoother urban mobility during the event.
