State-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) have signed an umbrella memorandum of understanding to strengthen integrated infrastructure development across the country. The agreement focuses on closer coordination between road and rail planning, particularly in difficult and challenging terrains where joint solutions can improve efficiency, safety and economic outcomes. Key areas of collaboration include rail-cum-road bridges, tunnels, multi-modal logistics parks, inter-modal hubs and grade separators at locations where highways intersect or run alongside railway lines. The partnership will also allow NHAI to leverage KRCL's experience in complex bridge and tunnel projects, safety audits and slope stabilisation, while jointly adopting advanced technologies and digital tools to enhance project monitoring, asset management and overall infrastructure delivery.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, have entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening integrated infrastructure development. The agreement seeks to bring road and rail planning onto a common platform to improve coordination, particularly in regions with complex geographical and engineering challenges.
Under the umbrella MoU, both organisations will work together to identify, plan and pursue areas of mutual interest. The focus will be on integrated development of national highway and railway infrastructure, enabling more efficient and safer execution of projects where the two networks intersect or coexist.
According to an official statement, key areas of cooperation include the planning and development of rail-cum-road bridges and tunnels, multi-modal logistics parks, inter-modal transport hubs and grade separators. These interventions are expected to improve connectivity and optimise land and resource use at critical junctions of road and rail networks. The MoU also provides for the creation of common utility corridors wherever feasible.
A significant aspect of the collaboration is NHAI's access to KRCL's extensive experience in executing projects in difficult terrains. This includes specialised support for review and proof-checking of designs, drawings and safety aspects of complex bridge and tunnel projects, as well as expertise in slope stabilisation works.
The agreement also covers safety and quality audits of existing tunnels and slope protection works, along with training programmes for NHAI officers and staff at KRCL's training institute. In addition, both entities will collaborate on adopting advanced technologies and digital solutions for project monitoring, traffic and asset management, and smart infrastructure initiatives. Data sharing between the two organisations is expected to improve planning accuracy and operational efficiency across large-scale infrastructure projects.
