Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to redevelop the Delhi Gate junction on Asaf Ali Road with an investment of INR 4.6 crore. The project will convert the heavily trafficked intersection into an organised urban space featuring a central landscaped island, seating, a fountain, paved walkways, a children's play area, a skating rink, and parking facilities. The plan covers the stretch between Netaji Subhash Marg and Asaf Ali Road, and the contractor will manage clearances, soil tests, as-built drawings, and progress reporting while ensuring smooth traffic flow.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to revamp the Delhi Gate junction on Asaf Ali Road, allocating INR 4.6 crore for the project. This junction, located on a key route towards the Red Fort, currently handles high daily traffic volumes and is a critical point for both vehicles and pedestrians. The redevelopment aims to transform the intersection into a structured urban space while retaining traffic efficiency.
Central to the plan is the creation of a large landscaped island, which will serve as a public space. The design includes seating areas, a fountain, paved walkways, a children's play area, a skating rink, and designated parking spaces. The project is intended to enhance pedestrian access and provide recreational and aesthetic value to the area without disrupting the movement of vehicles.
The selected contractor will be responsible for all regulatory clearances, preparing as-built drawings, conducting pre-commissioning tests, and providing warranty coverage for installed equipment. Soil assessments and other preliminary site studies will be conducted before work begins. A detailed schedule of stages and progress milestones will be submitted to PWD for monitoring, ensuring timely completion.
The project also highlights the importance of balancing urban infrastructure improvements with public utility. While past PWD initiatives in Delhi have focused mainly on road strengthening, junction upgrades, elevated corridors, and foot overbridges to ease congestion, this plan introduces dedicated spaces for public use in addition to traffic management. Maintaining accessibility and efficient traffic flow throughout construction will be a primary concern, given the junction's strategic location and high traffic density.
