Synopsis

A tragic accident in Sector 150, Greater Noida, claimed the life of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta after his SUV fell into a water-filled construction pit left unsecured at a stalled commercial mall site. The plot had remained open for nearly two years without barricades, fencing or reflectors, turning it into a serious hazard, especially during heavy fog. Despite signalling for help and sharing his location, rescue teams faced visibility challenges and could not reach him in time. Police have filed an FIR against the developers for negligence, while the Noida Authority has taken action against officials and ordered safety checks across construction sites.

In Sector 150, Greater Noida, Yuvraj Mehta, a 27-year-old software engineer, died when his SUV broke through a damaged boundary wall and fell into a water-filled construction pit. The plot, dug for a commercial mall project nearly two years ago, had been left unsecured, accumulating water from nearby sewage and rains due to restrictions on discharge into the Hindon River. The absence of fencing, barricades, and reflectors made the site extremely hazardous, especially during the dense fog that enveloped the area at the time of the incident.

The accident occurred around midnight while Mehta was returning home and negotiating a sharp turn near ATS Le Grandiose. Unable to swim, he climbed onto the car roof and repeatedly flashed his phone's torch to signal for help, also sharing his live location with his father, Raj Mehta, a retired SBI Director. Rescue teams from the local police, fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) faced extreme challenges due to poor visibility. Initial attempts using ropes, cranes, and ladders could not reach him. Despite his cries being heard for over an hour, fog and distance hindered effective rescue, and his body was recovered around 4.30am.

Following the incident, police registered an FIR against MZ Wishtown Planners Pvt Ltd and Lotus Greens Construction Pvt Ltd, citing culpable homicide, causing death by negligence, and acts endangering life. The FIR highlighted the serious negligence of builders for failing to install reflectors or barricades around the pit. Lotus Greens stated that the plot had been transferred to Grihapravesh Group with Noida Authority approval in 2019-20.

Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M took administrative action, terminating the services of junior engineer Naveen Kumar and issuing showcause notices to other officials responsible for traffic and safety work in the area. Authorities have directed inspections at other construction sites to ensure safety measures are in place. Residents have raised concerns over long-standing hazards at the site, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of construction safety norms.
