Central Railway has proposed shifting select long-distance trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Panvel to ease pressure on Mumbai's suburban network. The move is expected to free up train paths on the Main line, allowing around 15 additional local services, including during peak hours. The plan includes rerouting five train pairs and rescheduling six others, along with increasing train lengths to carry more passengers. Railways estimate this could benefit 40,000 to 50,000 commuters daily. The proposal is awaiting Railway Board approval and is aimed at improving efficiency while balancing suburban and long-distance travel needs.
Central Railway has prepared a proposal to shift certain long-distance trains away from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Panvel. The plan aims to free up train paths that are currently occupied by long-distance services, which often disrupt the suburban timetable. Officials have indicated that this change could allow around 15 additional local services on the Main line, including morning and evening peak hours.
The proposal identifies five pairs of long-distance trains that would be rerouted, while six other pairs would have their departure or arrival times adjusted. The rescheduling may involve changes ranging from ten minutes to several hours, depending on operational feasibility. Officials have suggested increasing the length of these trains to up to 24 coaches from the current 16-20, which will help carry more passengers without adding extra services.
Trains being considered for rerouting include Rajyarani Express, Nagercoil Express, Dadar-Tirunelveli Superfast Express, Thiruvananthapuram Central Express, and Hapa Duronto. Central Railway estimates that rerouting could allow an additional 40,000 to 50,000 commuters to travel during peak hours without major investment. Six of the extra local services could run during the busiest periods, directly easing congestion on the Main line.
The proposal is currently with the Railway Board for approval. Separately, authorities are planning to reintroduce 14 air-conditioned local trains on the Harbour line to improve commuter comfort. Officials stress that these changes are aimed at balancing the needs of local and long-distance passengers while maximizing the efficiency of available train paths.
