Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has unveiled and inaugurated a suite of infrastructure projects across West Bengal and Assam totalling more than INR 11,000 crore, in a push to strengthen regional connectivity and economic linkages in eastern and northeastern India.
During a visit spanning both states, the prime minister flagged off significant rail and road projects designed to improve passenger and freight movement. In West Bengal, he inaugurated multiple rail infrastructure initiatives, including the launch of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train connecting Howrah in West Bengal with Guwahati in Assam, as well as expanded Amrit Bharat Express services, enhancing long-distance connectivity and offering modern travel options for commuters and businesses alike.
In Assam, Mr Modi laid the foundation stone for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project along the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of National Highway-715, valued at roughly INR 6,950 crore. The project incorporates environmentally conscious design elements such as a 35-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor to allow uninterrupted movement for animals while improving road safety and reducing travel time for vehicles. The corridor is expected to link Upper Assam more effectively with key economic centres and support tourism and local employment opportunities.
The cluster of projects also includes enhancements to rail service infrastructure in Malda and other locations aimed at accelerating mobility, trade and youth employment prospects. Officials said the investments will not only reduce travel times and improve logistics but also support broader socio-economic development across the two states, reinforcing integrated infrastructure development in the eastern and northeastern regions.
