Synopsis

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced the temporary closure of one of its three runways for nearly five months beginning February 16, 2026, to undertake critical resurfacing and infrastructure upgrades. Despite the shutdown, the airport will maintain its scheduled daily air traffic movement capacity through coordinated planning with airlines and air traffic control. The rehabilitation programme includes resurfacing the runway, building a new rapid exit taxiway, and installing an upgraded Instrument Landing System to enhance safety and operational resilience. Commissioned in 2008, the runway has seen heavy usage over 17 years, making comprehensive rehabilitation essential. DIAL said the project is aimed at meeting future traffic growth and global aviation standards, with recommissioning expected by early July, subject to regulatory approvals.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Monday said that Runway 11R/29L will remain closed for operations for nearly five months starting February 16, as the airport undertakes a major resurfacing and upgrade programme. During the closure, DIAL said the airport's scheduled air traffic movement capacity will be maintained at 1,514 movements per day.

The runway rehabilitation programme, subject to regulatory approvals, includes resurfacing works, construction of a new rapid exit taxiway, and installation of a new Instrument Landing System. DIAL said airlines and air traffic control have been fully briefed, and operational plans are in place to ensure continuity of services.

Commissioned in 2008, the runway has been in continuous service for 17 years and last underwent minor rehabilitation in 2017. DIAL said rising traffic volumes, higher operational intensity, and natural ageing have made comprehensive rehabilitation necessary to enhance safety, operational resilience, and future capacity.

The runway is expected to be recommissioned in early July, subject to approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the project is critical for long-term operational safety and compliance with global aviation standards, and that the company is working closely with all stakeholders to minimise disruption.
