Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has achieved its highest property tax collection so far, crossing INR 2,700 crore in the current financial year up to December-end. The collection marks a rise of around 45% compared to the same period last year. The increase has been supported by growth in the registered taxpayer base and strong participation in the SUNIYO tax amnesty scheme, which waived penalties and interest on past dues. Despite improved compliance, a large number of registered properties are yet to clear outstanding payments.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has recorded its highest-ever property tax collection, with revenue crossing INR 2,700 crore in the current financial year till the end of December. This represents a significant increase of about 45% compared to the collections recorded during the same period last year, reflecting stronger compliance and wider participation by property owners across the city.

Alongside higher revenue, the civic body has also seen a steady expansion in its taxpayer base. The number of registered property taxpayers increased to around 12.43 lakh, up from about 10.31 lakh in the previous year. Officials have attributed this growth to improved registration processes, increased awareness, and targeted efforts to bring previously unassessed properties into the tax system.

A major contributor to the higher collection has been the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), a property tax amnesty scheme introduced for the current financial year. Under the scheme, property owners were allowed to clear current dues along with arrears from the past five years without paying interest and penalties. This initiative encouraged many defaulters and irregular payers to regularise their tax status.

Around 1.7 lakh property owners availed benefits under the SUNIYO scheme, contributing close to INR 933 crore to the total collection. Of this amount, approximately INR 320 crore came from nearly 91,000 new taxpayers who were added to the system during the year. Civic officials said this indicated that the scheme not only helped recover dues but also expanded the formal tax base.

Despite the strong response, the MCD noted that more than six lakh registered taxpayers have either underpaid or not paid property tax during the year. The civic body has urged these property owners to clear pending dues, warning that continued non-compliance could invite action under the provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.

The SUNIYO scheme remains available with a late payment provision carrying a nominal 5% penalty until the end of January. Property tax payments continue to be facilitated through the MCD's online portal, which has been strengthened over recent years with tools such as self-assessment features and calculators to simplify compliance.
