Sonepur railway station in Bihar is slated for a major upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with redevelopment work already more than half complete. The project aims to transform the station into a modern passenger hub with facilities similar to those found at airports, improving convenience, accessibility and safety for commuters. Works include a new station facade, expanded foot overbridge, upgraded passenger amenities, a second exit and renovation of multiple platforms. The redevelopment also incorporates enhanced lighting, digital information systems, landscaped areas and improved waiting and seating areas. Indian Railways hopes the makeover will strengthen Sonepur's role as a key transport centre and align with broader efforts to modernise stations across the country under the national scheme. Completion of remaining works will further elevate the station's status within the East Central Railway division.
Sonepur railway station, located in Bihar's East Central Railway division, is being redeveloped with extensive modernisation work that aims to give it an airport-like look and feel, Indian Railways has announced. The redevelopment is being carried out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide initiative to upgrade passenger amenities and infrastructure at key stations.
According to railway officials, more than half of the physical redevelopment work has already been completed. The project, with an estimated outlay of over INR 24 crore, focuses on improving overall passenger convenience, accessibility and operational efficiency to match contemporary standards.
Under the scheme, significant components of the upgrade have been undertaken. A new station facade building is being constructed, and a modernised foot overbridge has been built to ease movement across platforms. In addition to this, a second station exit is being developed to improve circulation and connectivity for passengers.
Upgrades to passenger amenities include enhanced waiting halls, modern toilets, better lighting, improved seating and digital information systems to provide real-time updates. Platform refurbishments are also underway, with work on platforms numbered three, four and five designed to improve safety and boarding convenience.
Landscaping and aesthetic improvements are part of the project, lending the station a visually appealing and modern ambience. These enhancements are intended to elevate the travel experience for commuters and reflect the broader vision of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which seeks to bring world-class facilities to railway stations across India.
Once completed, Sonepur railway station is expected to serve as a model facility within the East Central Railway division, offering improved services and comfort for passengers, and reinforcing the government's push to modernise rail infrastructure nationwide.
