Synopsis

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is preparing for significant international expansion in 2026 following strong performance in 2025. Passenger traffic reached 43.82 million, up from 40.73 million in 2024, while international departures rose from 38 to 51 daily flights, a 28.7 percent increase. The airport added five domestic and five international routes, expanded airline services, and saw cargo volumes grow 5 percent to 520,985 metric tonnes. New cargo terminals and logistics facilities support trade in perishables, pharmaceuticals, electronics, auto parts, and e-commerce. The expansion aims to strengthen Bengaluru's position as a global aviation hub.

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport is preparing to expand international connectivity and overall capacity in 2026 after closing 2025 with higher passenger numbers and moderate cargo growth. The airport operator emphasized its plan to scale both passenger and cargo operations while supporting airline partnerships and route network growth.

In 2025, total passenger traffic at KIA reached 43.82 million, compared with 40.73 million the previous year. The airport recorded its highest single-day passenger movement of 1,37,317 on 23 November 2025, while daily aircraft movements peaked at 837 in October, with an annual average of 765. A notable development was the airport moving from third to second position nationally in domestic flights operated in October 2025.

International traffic showed the strongest growth, with average daily international departures rising from 38 in 2024 to 51 in 2025, leading to a 28.7 percent year-on-year increase in international passengers. The airport added five new domestic routes, including Hindon, Bidar, Jaisalmer, Silchar, and Navi Mumbai, and five international routes, including Dammam, Ho Chi Minh City, Krabi, Hanoi, and Riyadh. Overall, KIA was connected to 113 destinations, with 79 domestic and 34 overseas. Key domestic destinations included Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Pune, while major international links were Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, London Heathrow, and Kuala Lumpur.

Airline operations expanded steadily. Air India Express increased flights, IndiGo added new international routes, Akasa Air launched services to Phuket and Jeddah, and VietJet and Vietnam Airlines joined the network. Major international carriers such as Lufthansa, KLM, Japan Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic increased frequencies on long-haul sectors.

Cargo operations also strengthened. Total volumes reached 520,985 metric tonnes, a 5 percent rise from 2024, with the highest single-day throughput of 2,207 metric tonnes on 7 August 2025. Cargo destinations now include 37 cities served by 15 airlines, with shipments dominated by agri-perishables, pharmaceuticals, electronics, auto parts, and e-commerce goods. New infrastructure included a domestic cargo terminal by Menzies Aviation and the AISATS BLR Logistics Park, which expanded warehousing capacity.

The airport operator expects international traffic and cargo demand to continue driving growth in 2026, with additional routes and increased flight frequencies planned. KIA aims to reinforce Bengaluru's standing as a global aviation and logistics hub, supporting both business and tourism growth in the region.
