Synopsis

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has introduced a layered strategy to maintain uninterrupted digital access for passengers, drivers, and airport staff. Measures include infrastructure improvements, operational planning, and hands-on assistance to resolve connectivity issues across the terminal. Clear WiFi login instructions, physical step-by-step standees, OTP kiosks, and wardens in key areas are in place to assist users. The airport is also coordinating with telecom providers on fair infrastructure charges, amid earlier concerns over Right of Way permissions and fees. Operations began late last month, making these measures critical.

Navi Mumbai International Airport has implemented a multi-layered approach to ensure continuous digital connectivity for everyone at the airport, including travellers, cab drivers, and airline staff. The airport operator said that a combination of infrastructure upgrades, operational measures, and on-ground assistance is being deployed to address connectivity challenges across all terminal areas.

Passengers and visitors can find clear WiFi login instructions on flight information displays and other digital boards throughout the terminal. Physical standees with step-by-step guidance are placed in key areas such as arrivals, departures, and terminal circulation zones. Users can also obtain one-time password (OTP) tokens at designated kiosks by presenting valid identification, following government norms.

To provide immediate assistance, NMIA has deployed wardens in high-visibility yellow uniforms at baggage claim areas, arrival forecourts, and taxi pick-up zones. These wardens help passengers and app-based cab drivers who may face connectivity issues. Educational outreach is also being prioritised, with instructional videos demonstrating how to connect to the internet being circulated among drivers, passengers, and airport staff.

The airport is coordinating closely with radio cab operators and app-based taxi aggregators. A first-in, first-out vehicle allocation system ensures passengers can access cabs even if connectivity is temporarily disrupted.

These measures come amid earlier concerns from telecom operators over Right of Way (RoW) permissions and higher charges at NMIA. The Cellular Operators Association of India had requested intervention from the Telecom Department, citing alleged restrictions. The airport rejected these claims, stating it will not allow cartelisation in rates. It proposed that telecom service providers be charged for infrastructure at rates aligned with those at Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).

The Adani Group-CIDCO-owned greenfield airport started commercial operations late last month. NMIA's strategy highlights the importance of reliable connectivity in modern airports, ensuring that technology enhances passenger experience and operational efficiency from the outset.
