Kanpur administration has intensified efforts to reduce accidents caused by dense fog on national highways. Streetlights have been rescheduled to improve early morning and night visibility, and illegally parked vehicles along highways are being removed to ensure smoother traffic flow. Public awareness campaigns under National Road Safety Month are educating motorists about safe driving in low visibility, including using reflective tapes on vehicles. Highway patrol teams are regularly inspecting streetlights and roads. These steps are part of ongoing measures to improve road safety amid persistent fog in the region.
Kanpur officials have taken several steps to address the risks posed by thick fog that has been reducing visibility on national highways. The District Magistrate, Jitendra Pratap Singh, has directed that streetlights on major highway stretches remain on from 5pm to 8am, ensuring better visibility during long winter nights and early mornings when fog is heaviest. Authorities have also focused on clearing illegally parked vehicles from highway sides, which often block traffic and increase the risk of collisions in low visibility. Highway patrol and NHAI teams are performing regular night inspections to identify and repair non functional streetlights promptly, reducing the chances of unlit stretches that can endanger motorists.
As part of National Road Safety Month, the NHAI is conducting awareness campaigns at toll plazas across Kanpur. These campaigns guide travelers on safe driving practices in foggy conditions, including maintaining safe distances, using headlights correctly, and equipping vehicles with reflective tapes for increased visibility. Officials are also advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during dense fog periods.
The Indian Meteorological Department has indicated that cold and foggy conditions are expected to continue in the region, with visibility likely to remain low in early mornings and evenings. Officials are urging drivers to follow safety guidelines strictly to prevent accidents. Combined with infrastructure improvements and awareness drives, these measures aim to create a safer environment for highway travel during winter.
Traffic police and road safety authorities have emphasized that these steps must be paired with responsible driving behavior. Using headlights, maintaining proper vehicle distance, and avoiding high-speed travel in fog are being highlighted through continuous campaigns.
