The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has started a significant redevelopment of Khan Market's central Middle Lane, fulfilling long-standing requests from traders and visitors. The project is part of NDMC's plan to upgrade key commercial areas, focusing on better infrastructure, utility management, and pedestrian-friendly design. The foundation stone for the current phase was laid recently, marking the start of detailed improvement works.

NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Chahal said the project aligns with the council's 2026-27 budget and broader goals of Developed India, Developed Delhi, Developed NDMC. He emphasized that the project supports national development objectives while improving the visitor experience and supporting local businesses.

The redevelopment includes granite flooring, integrated service ducts for civil and electrical utilities, and better drainage facilities. The work is being carried out under the Upgradation and Improvement of Environs of Khan Market (Phase II) project, which has an allocated budget of INR 1.21 crore. NDMC expects the Middle Lane improvements to be completed within three months, aiming for April 2026.

In addition to the lane upgrades, NDMC has already enhanced public amenities, including toilets, parking areas, and traffic management. Additional works, including better entry points and pedestrian pathways, are underway with a budget of INR 25 lakh and are expected to be finished in the near future.

Officials emphasized that the upgrades aim to make Khan Market more accessible, organized, and sustainable without affecting its historic character.
