Indore is preparing to add 150 electric buses to its public transport network under the central government's PM E-Bus Scheme, which plans a total of 582 buses across several cities. The buses will provide air conditioned, zero-emission travel, connecting homes, offices, schools, and markets. Central support includes 60% of depot costs and full funding for charging infrastructure, linked with AMRUT 2.0. Phase 2 will extend services to Rewa and Dewas, aiming to green 20% of urban fleets by 2028. This move complements ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and improve commuter experience.
Indore will soon receive 150 electric buses under the PM E-Bus Scheme, part of a nationwide initiative to modernise urban public transport. Across Madhya Pradesh, 582 buses are being introduced, with about 40% expected to start operations by April. In addition to Indore, cities including Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, and Sagar are also receiving buses, with allocations of 100, 32, and smaller numbers respectively. The fleet will offer air-conditioned travel and zero-emission routes, reducing reliance on diesel and improving commuter comfort.
The buses are designed to link key locations efficiently, connecting residential areas to offices, schools, and markets while maintaining affordable fares. The initiative comes alongside a 22% increase in the Union Budget allocation for Metropolitan Transport Projects in Madhya Pradesh, rising from INR 2,368 crore to INR 2,886 crore, supporting better public transport infrastructure across the state.
Funding support from the central government covers 60% of depot costs and full installation of charging infrastructure, coordinated with the AMRUT 2.0 urban development programme. In the second phase, cities such as Rewa and Dewas will be connected through electric bus services, with the long-term goal of greening at least 20% of urban bus fleets by 2028.
Indore's existing public transport network includes CNG buses and some electric vehicles. Local authorities have been expanding EV charging networks and upgrading depot facilities to accommodate the new buses. Officials have emphasised that adding electric buses is expected to reduce pollution, improve traffic management, and encourage a shift towards sustainable urban mobility, benefiting daily commuters across the city.
