Synopsis

The Union Budget for 2026-27 has allocated INR 517 crore for the Pune Metro project to support ongoing construction and planned network expansion. The funding is aimed at completing pending Phase I works and moving preparatory activities for Phase II corridors. Key focus areas include the Pimpri Nigdi elevated stretch and the Swargate Katraj underground section. With daily ridership remaining above two lakh passengers, the allocation reflects sustained demand for metro services across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 has provided an allocation of INR 517 crore for the Pune Metro project, reinforcing support for the city's expanding urban transport network. The funds are expected to be used for completing ongoing construction works under Phase I and for advancing early-stage activities related to Phase II expansion.

At present, Pune Metro operates over a network of nearly 33 km across two corridors connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. These corridors have seen steady commuter usage, with daily ridership consistently exceeding two lakh passengers in recent months. Officials involved with the project have indicated that the funding will help maintain construction momentum on pending stretches that are critical for improving last-mile connectivity.

One of the key projects under focus is the elevated Pimpri-Nigdi corridor, which has reached roughly 50 per cent completion. Construction activity on this stretch is expected to pick up further during the current financial year. In parallel, preparatory work is progressing for the Swargate Katraj underground section, including steps to appoint specialised agencies for tunnel construction ahead of the upcoming monsoon period.

The budgetary support also provides room to move forward with feasibility studies for Phase II corridors that have already received in-principle approval from the central government. These proposed routes include Khadakwasla,Swargate,Kharadi, Ramwadi,Wagholi,Vithalwadi, Vanaz Chandni Chowk, and Nal Stop Warje. Detailed project reports for these corridors are expected to be taken up once initial studies are completed.

Pune Metro is being implemented by Maha Metro, which has previously highlighted the importance of timely funding to avoid construction delays and cost escalations. The latest allocation comes amid broader infrastructure spending announced for Maharashtra, including proposals for improved regional rail connectivity involving Pune.
