Construction on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor has reached another milestone with the completion of a 100 metre steel bridge on the Kalupur-Shahpur stretch in Ahmedabad. This is the 13th of 17 planned steel bridges in Gujarat and was specially designed to pass over an existing metro tunnel without transferring any load to it. The 1,098 tonne bridge was assembled on temporary supports before being lowered onto permanent foundations. The project continues steady progress, with viaducts, tunnels, stations, and major structures steadily taking shape across the 508 km corridor.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail project has achieved another significant construction milestone with the completion of a steel bridge on the Kalupur-Shahpur section in Ahmedabad. The 100 metre bridge is the 13th of the 17 steel bridges planned in Gujarat and is designed to safely cross over an existing underground metro tunnel without transferring any load to the tunnel structure. Engineers adopted a steel truss design due to the requirement of keeping the bridge foundations at a safe distance from the metro tunnel, instead of using the conventional span by span concrete viaducts used elsewhere on the corridor.
The bridge weighs approximately 1,098 metric tonnes, stands 14 metres tall, and spans 15.5 metres in width. It was initially assembled on temporary trestles at 16.5 metres above ground before being carefully lowered onto its permanent supports. This method ensured precise alignment and structural safety while preventing any risk to the underlying metro tunnel. The use of steel allowed for a longer span while maintaining the required strength and stability for high speed train operations.
This milestone is part of broader progress on the 508 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, where multiple viaducts, tunnels, and stations are under construction simultaneously. Several bridges over major rivers in Gujarat have already been completed, and tunnel breakthroughs in challenging terrain have been reported. The corridor continues to see steady work on piers, viaducts, and station structures, reflecting both the scale of the project and the technical challenges involved in developing India's first high speed rail line. The bridge construction also demonstrates innovative engineering solutions to manage existing urban infrastructure while maintaining project timelines.
