The Dhruv NG, an advanced version of HAL's indigenous helicopter, features twin Shakti engines, a civil-certified glass cockpit, terrain awareness systems, and enhanced safety measures. Pawan Hans, operating a fleet of 42-46 helicopters, will be the first major civil operator of this platform.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has secured a significant contract with Pawan Hans Ltd, a Noida-based helicopter services operator, for the supply of 10 Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters. The total value of the contract exceeds INR 1,800 crore. Signed in Hyderabad, the deal also covers the provision of associated spares and accessories, with the execution expected to be completed by 2027.
The Dhruv NG is an advanced variant of HAL's indigenous Dhruv helicopter platform, which has been used across civil, defence, and utility operations for many years. The new generation helicopter is powered by twin Shakti engines, includes a civil-certified glass cockpit, terrain awareness systems, and incorporates enhanced safety features to provide redundancy over traditional single-engine models.
This variant had its maiden flight at HAL's Bengaluru facility on December 30, 2025, and full civil certification is expected within the next few months. Once certified, deliveries to Pawan Hans will begin, making it the company's first major civil deployment of the Dhruv NG.
Pawan Hans currently operates a fleet of approximately 42-46 helicopters, providing charter and transportation services across India. The introduction of the Dhruv NG is expected to strengthen its operational capabilities with a modern, reliable, and safer platform suited for both passenger and utility operations.
HAL's civil aviation ambitions have been gradually expanding, complementing its well-established defence business. By supplying advanced helicopters to state-owned operators like Pawan Hans, HAL is leveraging its experience in the Dhruv platform while addressing growing domestic demand for indigenous aviation solutions.
The Dhruv NG combines HAL's long-standing expertise with modern aviation technology. Its enhanced safety systems, advanced avionics, and improved performance make it a notable addition to India's civil helicopter fleet, providing both operational flexibility and reliability for operators like Pawan Hans.
