Synopsis

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) have entered a joint venture to manufacture Sukhoi SJ 100 regional jets in India, boosting domestic aircraft production. HAL will hold local certification, manufacturing, and sales rights while UAC provides technical support and design expertise. Additionally, UAC will supply six Ilyushin Il 114-300 turboprop aircraft to Indian firm Flamingo Aerospace, with guidance to enhance assembly, maintenance, and infrastructure capabilities. This move reflects a long-term effort to strengthen India's aviation manufacturing, regional connectivity, and technology transfer initiatives.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has formalized a joint venture with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce Sukhoi SJ 100 superjets in India. The SJ 100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body regional passenger aircraft already in commercial service, with over 200 units operating across 16 airlines worldwide. The aircraft is expected to significantly contribute to India's regional connectivity, particularly under government-backed schemes like UDAN, and meet the projected demand of over 200 jets over the next decade.

HAL will have the rights to certify, manufacture, and sell the SJ 100 domestically, while UAC will provide technical assistance, design services, and specialist support to upgrade HAL's facilities for production. This collaboration builds on a memorandum of understanding signed last year and marks an important step in developing India's civilian aerospace manufacturing capacity, an area where large-scale production has been limited historically.

In parallel, UAC has entered an agreement with Indian firm Flamingo Aerospace to supply six Ilyushin Il 114-300 turboprop aircraft. The aircraft are suitable for short takeoff and landing, making them ideal for regional routes with smaller airports and challenging terrain. As part of the deal, UAC will guide Flamingo Aerospace in gradually expanding its capabilities in aircraft assembly, maintenance, modifications, repair, and overhaul, along with supporting infrastructure development.

These agreements reflect a broader collaboration between India and Russia in aviation and industrial technology, encompassing past defense partnerships and ongoing efforts to transfer technology and enhance local capabilities. By producing aircraft domestically, India aims to reduce reliance on imports, strengthen local aerospace supply chains, and foster skilled workforce development in civil aviation manufacturing.
