Synopsis

The Gujarat Cabinet has approved widening the 51 kilometre Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway from four lanes to eight, with service roads on both sides, at an estimated cost of INR 2,630 crore. The project includes a 6.1 km elevated corridor through Kalol, eight flyovers, and eight underpasses to improve traffic flow. Once completed, travel time between the two cities is expected to reduce to 45-50 minutes from the current 60 minutes. Officials say commuters from North Gujarat districts, including Mehsana, Patan, and Banaskantha, will benefit significantly. Work is expected to take two years after tendering.

The Gujarat Cabinet recently cleared the proposal to widen the Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway into an eight lane corridor from its current four lanes. The project, spanning 51 kilometres, is planned at an estimated cost of INR 2,630 crore. Along with the main lanes, seven-metre-wide service roads will be added on both sides to ensure smoother movement for local traffic and improve connectivity to adjoining areas. The tendering process is expected to begin soon, and construction is likely to be completed within two years thereafter.

The highway currently handles daily traffic exceeding 100,000 vehicles, resulting in frequent congestion, especially near Kalol and other towns along the route. Officials have stated that after expansion, travel time between Ahmedabad and Mehsana could reduce to about 45-50 minutes from the current 60 minutes. State government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani noted that the project will include eight flyovers and eight underpasses, benefiting commuters from Mehsana, Patan, and Banaskantha districts.

To specifically address congestion in Kalol city, a 6.1 kilometre elevated corridor will be constructed, connecting five existing overbridges and flyovers, allowing through traffic to bypass city roads. All existing flyovers and overbridges along the route will be widened to eight lanes, and new structures will also follow the same width. Underpasses will be constructed at eight points, including two near Shertha, one near IFFCO Kalol, two within Kalol city, and one each near Chhatral, Nandasan, and Ganeshpura, enabling safer and uninterrupted local traffic flow.

The Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway was originally upgraded to four lanes in 1999, with service roads on both sides. Over the years, rising traffic volumes and economic growth in northern Gujarat made a further expansion necessary. This project aligns with ongoing state and central government initiatives to improve road infrastructure, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity across the region. Experts suggest that once completed, the highway will not only ease daily commutes but also support economic activities in the surrounding districts by facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.
