Delhi has approved Phase 1A of its elevated Ring Road project, covering a 5 km stretch from Majnu Ka Tila to Salimgarh Fort, to address persistent traffic congestion. This section has been prioritised for its high traffic density and feasibility, while the overall project spans 57.5 km in six planned corridors. The project will integrate with existing infrastructure like the Red Line Metro and grade separators, while adhering to O-Zone and heritage protection norms. The detailed project report will guide tendering and construction, marking a significant step in improving city mobility and bypassing major bottlenecks.
The Delhi government has approved Phase 1A of the elevated Ring Road project, focusing on a nearly 5 km stretch from Majnu Ka Tila to Salimgarh Fort. Officials said this corridor was prioritised based on traffic density, congestion levels, and feasibility studies. The broader project aims to build a total of 57.5 km of elevated roads in six phases across the capital.
A senior government official stated that a preliminary project report had already been prepared. The detailed project report (DPR) is expected to be ready in the coming months, after which the tendering process will begin. This elevated corridor is designed to improve traffic flow by diverting through-traffic above busy intersections, particularly near bottlenecks like Kashmere Gate. The focus is primarily on mobility improvements rather than liveability parameters.
The remaining corridors include Azadpur Chowk to Metcalfe House Junction (7 km), Salimgarh Fort to DND Flyover (11.5 km), DND Flyover to Moti Bagh Metro Station (10.5 km), Moti Bagh to Rajouri Garden (10 km), and Rajouri Garden back to Azadpur Chowk (13.5 km). These sections will be implemented sequentially after Phase 1A.
Planning and construction will need careful coordination with existing infrastructure. The corridor runs parallel to the Yamuna River in an O-Zone area, requiring strict compliance with Master Development Plan norms. It intersects the Red Line Metro corridor and a grade separator near Kashmere Gate, necessitating integrated planning with transport authorities.
Heritage protection is also a key consideration. Three ASI-protected monuments, including Salimgarh Fort, lie along the route. Officials have assured that all construction and planning will strictly follow ASI guidelines to prevent any damage to these heritage sites.
The elevated Ring Road project revives the original vision of the Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road, intended to create a high-speed loop to ease congestion around Delhi. While temporary measures have been applied on existing Ring Road stretches to improve traffic, long-term solutions like elevated corridors are expected to provide more sustainable relief. This project also opens opportunities to upgrade road infrastructure, particularly in heavily congested zones.
