Synopsis

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has completed its first double-decker viaduct on the Maujpur Majlis Park corridor under Phase IV. The elevated structure between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar is now ready for metro train operations after trial runs and statutory safety inspections. The lower deck, meant for road traffic, is still under construction and is expected to be completed later this year. This project is part of a broader plan to integrate metro and road infrastructure in congested city areas.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has made its first double-decker viaduct operational for metro train movement on the Maujpur Majlis Park stretch of the Pink Line extension. The 1.4-km viaduct, located between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar stations, forms a critical part of the 12.3-km corridor being developed under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro network.

The viaduct has successfully completed trial runs and received clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, allowing trains to operate on the upper deck. The lower deck, designed to carry road traffic, is still under construction. Work on the road ramp had faced delays earlier due to pending tree-cutting approvals, which have now been addressed. DMRC expects the road portion to be completed later this year.

This double-decker structure is being developed jointly by DMRC and the Delhi government. It is designed to optimise limited urban space by allowing metro services and vehicular traffic to run on the same alignment at different levels. Once fully operational, it is expected to ease congestion in the densely populated northeast Delhi region.

The Maujpur Majlis Park corridor is significant as it will complete the Pink Line loop, making it the first fully circular line in the Delhi Metro system. This will allow passengers to travel around the city without changing lines, improving connectivity and reducing travel time.

DMRC is also constructing two more double-decker viaducts as part of Phase IV. Another structure of about 2.2 km is coming up between Azadpur and Ashok Vihar on the Janakpuri West RK Ashram Marg corridor, where major civil works are underway. A third and longer viaduct is being built on the Golden Line between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar, with foundation and pier construction in progress.
