Waltair also continued to support strong passenger operations and infrastructure upgrades, including track expansion and signalling enhancements, which contributed to broader operational improvements. The division's performance reflects a combination of freight momentum, diversified services and ongoing modernisation efforts.
The Waltair railway division has emerged as the leading freight earnings growth performer among Indian Railways divisions in the current fiscal year, posting a substantial increase in freight revenue compared with the previous year, divisional authorities said. During Republic Day celebrations, the divisional railway manager reported that the division's incremental freight earnings rose by about INR 1,220 crore, the highest growth recorded among the top ten divisions nationwide.
Waltair's freight operations showed robust traction, with a record loading of approximately 66.7 million tonnes, marking nearly 13 per cent year-on-year growth. Goods earnings for the division reached INR 8,212 crore, reflecting a rise of around 19 per cent, while gross revenue climbed to about INR 9,147 crore, up approximately 17.5 per cent over the last year and exceeding budget targets by around 12 per cent. This performance underscores the division's role as a key freight hub within Indian Railways.
In addition to freight achievements, the division noted strong passenger operations. It handled nearly 2.74 crore originating passengers, an increase on the previous year, and passenger earnings reached an all-time high of about INR 703 crore. Special train services also supported travel demand, with the division operating more than 230 special trains covering over 500 trips across its network.
Infrastructure development remained a priority during the year. The division completed projects including 21 km of track doubling, 36 km of third-line installation and 43 km of automatic signalling deployment, alongside commissioning of electronic interlocking systems at several stations. These enhancements are intended to support increased freight capacity and operational reliability.
Waltair also advanced sustainability initiatives, with Visakhapatnam station earning Platinum Green Railway Station Certification. The division commissioned over 1,800 kWp of solar power capacity under the Net Zero Mission, yielding energy savings and planned expansion of renewable assets.
Officials said that this combination of freight growth, infrastructure improvements and diversified operations reflects the division's balanced performance approach and its contribution to broader rail sector objectives. The results highlight the strategic importance of freight traffic and service enhancements in supporting regional economic activity and internal revenue generation within Indian Railways.
