Puducherry is set to undertake major road infrastructure projects with Union funding of INR 437 crore to ease urban congestion and improve safety. Plans include a 4 km four lane flyover connecting Indira Gandhi Square, Rajiv Gandhi Square, and Marapalam, and a 13.5 km four lane arterial road from Ariyankuppam to Mullodai, along with widening of existing roads. The initiative is expected to reduce traffic by about 55 per cent, enhance commuter safety, and support the growing tourism sector. These works align with broader connectivity improvements across road, rail, and air networks.
Puducherry's administration has announced an extensive road infrastructure program aimed at decongesting the city and improving traffic flow. The Lieutenant Governor stated that the projects, with a total investment of INR 437 crore supported by the Union government, will focus on creating safer and more efficient transport routes.
A central component of the plan is a four lane flyover of approximately 4 km linking Indira Gandhi Square, Rajiv Gandhi Square, and Marapalam. This flyover will connect key highways towards Chennai, Villupuram, and Chidambaram, significantly cutting travel times and reducing congestion. Authorities expect traffic in the city to drop by roughly 55 per cent once the flyover and associated upgrades are complete.
In addition, a 13.5 km four lane arterial road will be constructed from Ariyankuppam to Mullodai. Existing roads leading to Marapalam will also be widened to accommodate higher traffic volumes and improve commuter safety. The combined effect of these projects is anticipated to streamline east west connectivity and relieve pressure on existing urban corridors.
The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that Puducherry continues to gain prominence as a major tourist destination, ranking just behind Toulouse in France in terms of visitor preference. To support this, the government has laid out plans to strengthen tourism infrastructure and improve connectivity with other cities through rail, air, and road networks. Efforts such as the Thirunallar Temple Town project, which aims to develop the Karaikal Thirunallar Lord Dharbaranyeswarar temple as a global tourist destination, are also part of the broader strategy.
Authorities are regularly organising cultural festivals and handicraft exhibitions to enrich visitor experiences and promote tourism growth. The road projects are seen as a foundational step in ensuring smooth transport for residents and tourists alike, complementing other regional upgrades such as improvements on the Puducherry Poondiyankuppam stretch and East Coast Road.
